Pensioner Rebates

The local municipality offers rebates for pensioners aged 60 and above, providing relief on municipal rates based on income and property valuation. To apply, visit a designated walk-in centre with the required documentation. Applications cannot be submitted via email, and strict criteria apply.

The Criteria

Age 70+

The first R2 million of your municipal valuation is zero-rated. You only pay rates on the value above R2 million (roughly R75/month for every R100 000). It is not income-based – all qualifying homeowners over 70 years old will receive this, if you apply.

Ages 60-69

This is income-based. If you earn a gross monthly income under R11 904/month, the first R1.5 million of your municipal valuation is zero-rated. You only pay rates on the value above R1.5 million (roughly R75/month for every R100 000).

General

If you earn a gross monthly income between R11 904 and R20 404/month, the first R750 000 of your municipal valuation is zero-rated. You only pay rates on the value above R750 000 (roughly R75/month for every R100 000).

THE NITTY GRITTIES

The applicant must be the property owner. If there are two or more owners, only one needs to apply (as long as one meets the requirements). If it’s owned by a trust, CC, company, etc., then you cannot apply.

Download the forms and complete them.

For the 70+ rebate, you only need a certified copy of your ID and a signed copy of the form.

For the 60-69 rebate, you need a certified copy of your ID, a signed copy of the form, three months of recent bank statements, certified proof of monthly income or a certified copy of your SASSA card, and a recent income tax assessment issued by SARS.

Make a copy of your application form.

IMPORTANT: Get a reference number and make a note of it along with the date and who you spoke to. Write it on your copy of the application form and keep it somewhere safe as you may need it later in the year to verify your application.
