Ward Update | Road Closures for Juma Bike Race & Jazz on the Lake

Aug 23, 2019 | Ward update

JUMA Mountain Bike Race – Sun 25 Aug

This race occurs every year and it follows roughly the same format as every year. There is very little disruption as they use the trails aloing the various rivers and the storm-water drains. However, they do surface at Saxonwold between Oxford Rd and Zoo Lake for a couple of kilometers which does result in some roac closures and probably delays for motorists.

The following closures will be operation. Note that the closures in the suburban Saxonwold roads will not apply to residents, but you should expect delays getting in and out of your property, depending on the number of bikers using the road.

– Road Closure times for race day: 5am to 3pm.
– Oxford Rd at the intersection of Engelwold/8th Ave. The race will cross Oxford Rd traffic will be diverted away from this intersection.
– Engelwold Ave frpm Oxford Rd to Saxonwold Ave.
– Saxonwold Ave from Englewold Ave to Erlswold Ave.
– Erlswold Ave from Saxpnwold Ave to Jan Smuts Ave

There will be a scaffold bridge across Jan Smuts Ave. Jan Smuts Ave will be closed on 22 Aug fm 8pm to 5am on 23 Aug to construct it.

Jan Smuts will be closed again to dismantle the bridge from 8pm on 26 Aug to 5am on 27 Aug.

Also they will be riding on the trails around perimeter of Delta Park as well as along the Braamfontein Spruit from Tana Rd to beyond Blairgowrie. Delta Park will be open for other users, but please exercise care when walking when starting and ending your walks at the various car parks and access roads.

NOTE – there is also a run from Wanderers to Lower Houghton on Sunday 25 Aug. This means there will be additional road closures to the east of Oxford Rd in the morning. I would advise that you avoid the whole area between Corlett Drive to Riviera Rd in Killarney if you are trying to get to the M1 or beyond.

Jazz on the Lake – Sunday 1 Sep

NOTE: this is mostly a cut and paste of last year’s notice.

The usual harbingers of Spring are the opening of the swimming pools on 1 September and Jazz on the Lake at Zoo Lake on the 1st weekend of September. This year will be no different.

Jazz on the Lake will take place on Sunday 1 September this year. The lineup of performers will be released soon. In the meantime, please prepare yourself for the road closures. The concert will end at 5pm.

The usual road closures will take place from 6am to 7pm along Oxford, Bolton, Chester and Emmerentia Roads. And Jan Smuts will be closed from Loch/Sherbourne Aves in Parktown to the Bolton/Chester Rds intersection in Rosebank (see list below). The Zoo and Military History Museum will be closed for the day.

There will be an event hotline: 083-666-1636. Note that this phone will only be turned on at 6’30am on Sunday 1 Sep.

If you need resident’s passes, then contact your Residents’ Association – note that suburbs like Parkhurst, Parktown North, Rosebank, Emmarentia, Lower Houghton, Killarney will not be directly affected by closures and so you don’t need passes.

If you want to go to the concert, there will be free busses from Killarney Mall, Marks Park and Metro Centre in Braamfontein – the last bus will leave at 1pm.
