Spruit Day this Saturday 16 September

Spruit Day is a day where the different communities along the Braamfontein Spruit organise events and clean-ups of the river and the river banks. The Blairgowrie Community Association said the following about Spruit Day:

“We intend for 2017 to be no different from previous years Spruit Day successes and for an even greater impact to be made with some 20 RA’s participating. Spruit Day is a coordinated restoration, improvement and clean-up of the Spruit. It creates an excellent opportunity for those living in your neighbourhood to spend a morning together making a difference in your RA and getting to know one another!”

This year’s activities in the Ward are:

Parkhurst/Victory Park:

9am-noon: Meet at the green pedestrian bridge accessed via the gate at the bottom of Parkhurst Rd/12th St and Zonda Ave/Rustenburg Rd, Victory Park. You can take part in the clean up. Jacques Hough from the Parkhurst Residents Assoc is leading the group: “Join us as we work together to care for our stretch of Spruit. What to wear: comfortable clothes, a hat and sturdy shoes. What to bring: sunscreen, water, gloves (we have refuse bags). Contact Jacques on environment@parkhurst.org.za

Blairgowrie/Craigpark:

This year the Blairgowrie Community Assoc will be partnering with the Old Parktonians Sports Club and the Craighall Residents Association (CRA) from 9.00 am onwards! We will be meeting at the Old Parktonians Sports Club! You can park behind the Bowls Club where parking is available – entrance at Garden Road, Bordeaux South (just off Jan Smuts Avenue).

We will be cleaning up along the Spruit and planting 90 trees! Sixty (60) trees donated by City Parks and an additional thirty (30) trees donated by a Landscaper, Patrick Watson! Much work has already been done along this section of Spruit by residents in the area and the difference already made is amazing but more work and beautification is still required! Please bring a hat, sunscreen and rubber gloves! Refuse bags will be provided and the holes will be dug already for tree planting so bring along a spade if you can too! Water and cold drinks will be provided by the BCA and CRA! Look forward to seeing you there!

Emergency Water Outage on Sat 16 Sep fm 8am-3’30pm

Joburg Water will be replacing a 300 mm stuck valve on cnr Riviera Rd and 4th Ave, Killarney. They have noted that the affected suburbs will be Killarney, Saxonwold, Houghton & Riviera.

HOWEVER, this pipe also carries water to the suburbs between Jan Smuts and Oxford (Parkwood, Rosebank and Dunkeld). As well as the portions of suburbs adjacent to Jan Smuts and Oxford (Lower Parkwood, Parktown North, Craighall Park, Hyde Park, Melrose).

I assume that JW think it will be a quick fix, but from previous experience, it is often more complicated that at first thought and there may be subsequent pipe bursts caused by the work. Also if lots of people water their gardens or use up too much water and repairs extend beyond 3pm, then the other suburbs mentioned above may have low pressure and/or lose supply.

As always the best method of getting updates is via the Joburg Water Twitter acct – @jhbwater – I usually also tweet and retweet on @jozi117.
